How to get out of your reading slump!

So, you clicked this article, which means you’re in a reading slump. And if you don't know what a reading slump is, then don't worry! A reading slump is something many readers fall into, making us struggle to pick up a book again. These can last for an awfully long time if you are unable to get out of one, and as our hopes are to influence increased reading, I am here to help you get out.

1. Delve into a new genre

The majority of reading slumps are caused because readers tend to stick to a select genre, maybe even one or two. And that's great, having a favourite genre is normal and expected, but reading the same type of thing is bound to get you slugging. So, try something that isn't what you're used to: say you enjoy romance, try reading a thriller.

2. Find your favourite style

If you're like me, the better the writing style of a book, the better I enjoy the story. An example of my favourite style would be the writings of One True Loves and the Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, both written by Taylor Jenkins Reid. Both books feel fast paced and less descriptive than let’s say, If I Disappear by Eliza Jane Brazier. And this is something to 100% be looking into. Do you prefer fast pace? Medium? What about slow?

3. Change of scenery

Do you have that one singular spot you love to read in? If you’re in a slump, try to read somewhere else. Anywhere, really. It could be a new spot in your room, your kitchen or maybe even outside. After all, us readers can’t be holed up in their room, becoming vampires with the very little sun they get. Don’t lie – we know this is you. A common favourite amongst our fellow readers is a coffee shop; I mean, who doesn’t love to sit with a warm cup of coffee (or whatever drink you prefer) while you read, the smell of freshly ground coffee filling the air?

4. Change your format

So chances are, you mostly read physical books, or you’re an avid e-book reader. But you’re in a slump? Change it up! Or maybe you read both, but you’re just struggling to read it. Easy to fix – audiobooks. Audiobooks can be found free on your library’s app if they have one (ours use the Libby app) or on other audiobook apps. Common apps for this are Audible and Spotify. There are even some on YouTube if you’re lucky.

5. Read with Someone Else

Reading doesn’t have to be a solo activity if you don’t want it to be. In fact, it can be a lot of fun being able to discuss books and your current reads with other readers. Whether you find a local book club or join social media, reading with other people, or simply just talking about reading with them, is a lot of fun. Who knows? You could even find more amazing reads. The most conversational type of social media for book lovers is probably Twitter, where you can join the #booktwt hashtag. And hey, while you’re at it, go follow us @_the_bookshelf_!

So, there we have it, five ways in which you can get out of the dreaded reading slump. Have you tried any of these? How did they work for you? Do you have any more tips? Let us know on our Twitter (@_the_bookshelf_) or Instagram (@the.bookshelf.outlet) and remember to take your time. As amazing as reading can be, you should never push yourself to exhaustion trying to finish a book. Don’t try to finish one if you can’t read one and don’t feel like you must finish an entire book in a short amount of time.
